What this chapter is about
This pack revises the grammar for PT-2: verbs and their three forms, helping (auxiliary) verbs — be, do, have — and subject–verb agreement; modals (can, could, may, might, must, should, would, will, shall, need to, used to, ought to) and the job each one does; and all nine tenses (simple, continuous and perfect in the present, past and future), with the time words that signal each one and a step-by-step method to change a sentence from one tense to another. It also covers the textbook's own grammar exercises from The Unlikely Best Friends, Neem Baba and Spices that Heal Us, plus conjunctions and much/many/few/little, which appear on the school worksheet.
The six things most worth remembering
1 · Three forms of a verb
V1 base (go) · V2 past (went) · V3 past participle (gone). Regular verbs add -d/-ed; irregular verbs must be learnt.
2 · Helping verbs
be (am, is, are, was, were), do (do, does, did), have (has, have, had) help the main verb show tense, questions and negatives.
3 · Modals
can = ability · must = compulsion · should = advice · may = permission/suggestion · need to = necessity · used to = past habit. A modal is followed by the base form (V1).
4 · The tense formula
Continuous = be + V-ing. Perfect = have/has/had + V3. Future = will + V1.
5 · Time words give the tense away
every day, always → simple present · now → present continuous · yesterday, ago → simple past · already, just → present perfect · tomorrow → future.
6 · Changing the tense
Keep the subject and object; change only the verb group. Check the helping verb agrees with the subject.
