Yesterday, Amber came home from school. While she was sitting under the neem tree, she heard a whisper. She had never talked to a tree before. Today she is telling (or tells) her friends about it, and tomorrow she will write in her diary.
Reasons: yesterday → simple past; "while…" → past continuous; before another past action → past perfect; today → present; tomorrow → future.
F · HOTS 2 × 3 = 6 marks
Higher-order thinking. Reason it out rather than recalling a fact.
F1 Explain the difference in meaning: (a) "I used to play the flute." (b) "I am used to playing the flute."
(a) used to + V1 is a modal of past habit — I played the flute regularly in the past, but I don't now. (b) be used to + V-ing means being familiar with something — playing the flute is normal and easy for me now. Same words, different grammar, different meaning.
F2 Why does the textbook use "had tied" but "asked" in the same passage about Buntee?
"He had tied Buntee with a rope the day before" happened earlier than the other past actions (coming back, noticing, asking), so it takes the past perfect. "He asked Buntee why he was sad" is part of the main sequence of events, so it is simple past. Past perfect shows which past action came first.
