What this chapter is about

This opening chapter welcomes you to Science as a new subject in the Middle Stage. It explains what science is โ€” a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world โ€” and why the book is called Curiosity. It compares science to a giant, unending jigsaw puzzle, previews what the book will explore (life on Earth, food, materials, water, hot and cold, the Sun, Moon and stars), and introduces the scientific method through the everyday example of a pen that stops writing. Its big message: anyone who follows the scientific method is working like a scientist โ€” so, in a way, we are all scientists.

The six things most worth remembering

1 ยท Science, defined

Science is a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world we live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe.

2 ยท Curiosity comes first

The most important thing for science is curiosity โ€” which is where the book gets its title.

3 ยท A never-ending jigsaw

Every discovery adds a piece; new knowledge leads to more questions, and sometimes a piece has to be moved when new discoveries change our understanding.

4 ยท Five steps, in order

Observe โ†’ Question โ†’ Guess โ†’ Test โ†’ Analyse.

5 ยท We are all scientists

The cook, the bicycle repair person and the electrician all use the scientific method in daily life.

6 ยท Be a "whys" person

"To be a wise person, you must be a whys person!" โ€” and science is rarely done alone.
