The Wonderful World of Science
Read top to bottom — it follows the order of the chapter. Tick each section off as you finish it.
1 · What science is
- Science = "a way of thinking, observing and doing things to understand the world we live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe."
- The most important thing: Curiosity (the title of the textbook).
- Science is everywhere: ocean depths ↔ outer space, kitchen ↔ playground. Big discoveries often come from unexpected places.
2 · The jigsaw puzzle idea
| Puzzle | Science |
|---|---|
| Each new piece | Each new discovery |
| Puzzle never ends | No limit — every answer leads to more questions |
| A piece in the wrong place is moved | New discoveries change our understanding |
| Pieces fit together | Ideas are all connected |
3 · The scientific method — learn the order
Most-asked part of the chapterSay the five steps in order without looking.
| # | Step | Pen example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Observe | The pen has stopped writing. |
| 2 | Question | "Why did my pen stop writing?" |
| 3 | Guess | The ink is finished. |
| 4 | Test | Open the pen and check the refill. |
| 5 | Analyse | Empty → guess correct. Not empty → new guess (ink dried up) and test again. |
Watch outA guess is tested by experiments or more observations — not by asking someone or by memorising.
4 · Everyday scientists
| Person | Problem | Guess to test |
|---|---|---|
| Cook | Dal spilled out of the cooker | Too much water? |
| Bicycle repair person | Flat tyre | Where did the air leak out? |
| Electrician | Bulb not working | Is it the bulb or the switch? |
Anyone who follows the scientific method is working like a scientist — "in a way, we are all scientists!"
5 · What the book will explore
- Planet Earth — the only planet known to support life · variety of plants and animals
- Food and what it is made of · materials and how to separate them
- Water (rain, ice, steam) · hot and cold (how hot is it?)
- Beyond Earth — the Sun, Moon and stars
6 · 10 facts most likely to be asked
- Science is a way of thinking, observing and doing things.
- The most important thing for science is curiosity.
- Science is like a giant, unending jigsaw puzzle.
- Steps: Observe, Question, Guess, Test, Analyse.
- A guess is tested through experiments or more observations.
- Wrong guess → make a new guess and test again.
- Earth is the only planet we know that supports life.
- Anyone using the scientific method is working like a scientist.
- Science is rarely done alone — scientists work in large teams.
- "To be a wise person, you must be a whys person!"
Common mistakes to avoid
Don't lose marks here
- Saying science is "just memorising facts" or "just doing experiments" — the chapter says it is a step-by-step process for finding answers.
- Getting the steps out of order — you guess before you test, and you analyse after testing.
- Thinking only people in laboratories are scientists — anyone using the method is working like one.
- Thinking a wrong guess means the method failed — it simply leads to a new guess.
- Thinking scientific knowledge never changes — new discoveries can move a misplaced piece of the puzzle.
